Hi all, I have decided on my poultry project to move the existing blue egg layers, to create a line or improve a line, for a saturated blue colored egg, med or large size, that maintains the healthiest, most productive chickens. I don’t know why, but this wild hair hit me and stuck. I know it will be hard. The most important for me is the deep blue color. I have searched for others online doing this but am not finding a community yet. I am a semi-retired mid 60’s dentist, new at this (2 years), but proven to myself I can keep them alive, healthy, hatch chicks and keep records. I currently have about 130 egg laying type chickens, ‘initially experimenting with hatchery breeds’ and self taught. I find Little genetic Predictability from the hatcheries. They make no claim to this either. I started recently with hatchery, Ameraucanas, Cream Legb and Whiting True Blues, planning to select the darkest blue eggs. I plan to cross the various genetic roos with the ‘bluest egg’ selected hens, keep records then check the progeny’s egg laying outcome. This sounds like something that Kenny T would not agree with. Feel free to comment. Should I ‘pick a breed ‘and just stay within the ‘genetic lines’ ( hatchery Ameraucaunas are often E Eggers genetically, and the cream legbars seem less vigorous) I went to the Ameraucana breeders site listed breeders, but they breed for show conformation, are far away and I am looking here for your Forum community recommendations for the most predictable, true ‘long term science based breeder of strains that lay blue eggs, whom I can pursue for ‘foundation stock’. I may have to drive across the country (from S Fla) or ship eggs…so looking for some objective, rigorous, advice! I prefer to spend more money and have more chickens than wait years longer the usual younger hobbyist. It takes a long time to do selective breeding and I’m not getting any younger 🙂  I appreciate your thoughts!! and THANKS for being here.  J Reed

I’m not sure if you are on Facebook but Mojo Homestead FL and Freshly Picked Chicks are breeding for egg color so getting some hatching eggs from them might be a good start.
